We, as South Indians, have Idli or Dosa almost everyday either for breakfast or dinner. Usually these dosas or idlis are served with sambar or chutneys. One starts feeling bored of serving the same regular coconut chutneys. We need to keep experimenting on new varieties of chutneys to make breakfast and dinner appealing to our loved ones. There are many ways in which a tomato chutney can be made, but this is quite simple and can be prepared in just 5 minutes. This Tomato Chutney tastes best when served with dosa, idli, paniyaram and oothapam.

Serve this spicy, hot and tangy chutney with idli, dosa or paniyaram.



  1. In a mixer, grind the tomato, onion, garlic and ginger.

  2. Add a little water and grind to a fine paste.

  3. Heat oil in a wok. Add urad dal and mustard seeds and let it sputter.

  4. Add curry leaves.

  5. Now add the ground paste.

  6. Add chilli powder, salt and turmeric powder. Add a little water and allow to boil for 3-5 minutes.

  7. Finally add a teaspoon of gingeley oil.

  8. Now the Tasty tangy Tomato Chutney is ready to be served with Idli, Dosa or paniyaram.
