Mochai Kulambu with Murungakkai and Maangai – Kara Kulambu

Mochai Kulambhu is a popular South Indian dish that is served with rice. Mochai is a popular bean that is commonly available in the Southern parts of the state. The bean is available fresh or in dried form and is known as Dolicho beans or Field beans in english. The curry tastes best not only with rice but also goes well with idli and dosa.

Mochai Kulambu with Murungakkai and Maangai - Kara Kulambu

Mochai cooked with murungakkai and mango.



  1. Pressure cook the mochai with little chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt.

  2. Heat oil in a kadai, add the mustard seeds, urad dal, cumin seeds and fenugreek. Once they splutter, add the garlic and shallots and saute.

  3. Then add the chopped tomatoes and curry leaves and saute.

  4. Now add the drumstick and saute for a minute. Then add the remaining chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder and salt.

  5. Add the mangoes.

  6. Pour a cup of water along with the tamarind extract and allow to boil.

  7. Now add the cooked mochai and boil for few minutes.

  8. Now pour the coconut milk.

  9. Allow the kulambu to boil for 2-3 minutes. Finally add a tablespoon of gingeley oil.

  10. Transfer to serving bowl.

  11. The hot and tangy Mochai Kulambu is ready to be served with rice and poriyal.
