Easy Pongal

Pongal also called as “Ven Pongal” is a traditional South Indian breakfast. My mom prepares it every sunday or on other special occasions when guests arrive. This version of the pongal is easy to cook with only a few ingredients but tastes equally good as the traditional one. Pack this Easy Pongal to school or office, giving your loved ones a complete healthy meal. I learnt it from my mom to cook complex recipes easily and quickly. She is a great inspiration for me in cooking. This Ven Pongal is usually served with sambar, chutney and vadai.

Serve this Ven Pongal with sambar and coconut chutney.

  1. Heat ghee in a pressure pan. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, cumin and pepper.

  2. When the sputtering stops, carefully add 2 cups of water.

  3. Add salt and turmeric powder.

  4. When the water boils, add the soaked rice and dal.

  5. Cover and pressure cook for 10 minutes or 2-3 whistles.
  6. Serve hot with sambar and coconut chutney.
